Of course with Dickens the greatest fun is developing all these characters. We performed this script with a cast of 9. Many of the costume changes were en vista, and quite magical. One challenge of this story is that two central characters begin as children and grow up. The script suggests child actors, but my leads were able to portray their full journeys amazingly. The set was simple yet detailed and allowed for the many scenes including the climax - a boat chase on the river Thames, culminating in a collision with a steamboat.
“The double-casting of roles and the theatrical (sometimes almost magical) quick transitions from one character to the next were a real delight…
“…It had been years since I’d read Great Expectations, but you brought the story back for me vividly with a performance that consistently rang true.” ~ Neil Sharnick, Carthage College
