This classic piece of American Expressionism led to great work by designers (almost all students) and interesting challenges. Stylized movement, abrupt shifts, repetitive motions, led to a nightmarish telling of a woman trapped in a rigid, machine-like world. I injected moments of "musical staging" (an opening scene, a speakeasy dance) to offset and, by contrast, deepen the overall dark tone of the play.
"A piece this complex in a style that is unfamiliar to most audience members needs a strong hand to make it work. Jamie Cheatham did a wonderful job in pulling all the elements of the show together." ~ Jim Butchart
