This beautiful piece by Mary Zimmerman, true to the source, is a series of stories within stories, woven together wonderfully like a magic carpet. Each story in the play is told as a means to save oneself from danger. Written in the midst of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" it ends with a modern air raid signal. To make this abrupt incursion at the play's end more integrated for 2014 audiences - less focused on matters in Iraq (or even the ongoing war in Afghanistan) - I chose to make the opening chorus lines spoken by a Middle Eastern POW, under interrogation.
