This adaptation by Malleson has a very contemporary feel in the language. Bouncing off this, we incorporated fun anachronisms in costumes and props. The play ends in a chant, one of Moliere's comedie ballets, in which Argan is fooled into believing he's being indoctrinated as a doctor - his dream come true. To bracket this, I opened with a musical dream sequence, and a spoof on doctors.
The production began with a modern operating theatre (pun intended) in which a patient dies on the table. As the heart monitor beep flatlines, the surgeons pack up. Just as they reach for their golf bags, the beeping resumes, suddenly the patient (Argan) sits upright. The beeping transforms into the the down beat of Robert Palmer's (Doctor, Doctor) Bad Case of Loving You. A cheesy dance number, complete with a tap break by a dancing skeleton, erupts around Argan. The dance winds down as the scene transforms to Argan's parlor, where he collapses exhausted into his chair, while his surgeons throw their bills at him and disappear. The play (proper) begins with Argan waking and reading his doctor's bills.
