This wonderful "translaptation" (of Corneille's original) by David Ives blends the old and the new with hilarious results. The traditional rhyming scheme and presentational style, melded with Ives' modern comic stylings, make for a challenging and rewarding script. This heightened text cries out for bold staging. Ives makes it clear that the play is as much about 'Theatre' as it is about distorting the truth. My approach landed on Theatricalism and Distortion as keys, which led to 'poking fun' at the 17th century innovation (and theatrical mainstay) of forced perspective scenery - taken to an extreme. Like most comedy, this script needs not only a bold scale but a matching degree of honesty and heart.
"Jamie Cheatham ... is director of this effervescent comedy and the solidity of the production clearly shows his vast experience with theater" - Amanda Sullivan, Express Milwaukee.com
