What a great show to present in 2015. Audiences really responded to the timeliness of the story. I tried to amplify the black voice by expanding on the role of Reverend Sykes' choir; they served as a Greek chorus, of sorts, commenting on Tom Robinson's plight, through powerful spirituals. I added an "introduction" in which the cast identified themselves; this helped to tie into the many internal narrations and established a sense of 'theatricalism' which made the use of young adults as children (and elderly) a clear convention.
This production was accepted to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region III, in Milwaukee. Very proud of my cast of 26.
"From its first moments, the inclusion of song is what sets this Mockingbird apart; the cast enters singing as each of Maycomb’s eclectic, lovable characters are revealed.
A particularly stunning visual occurs just prior to the scene in which Atticus (Michael Cienfuegos-Baca) sits in solidarity outside the jailhouse. While the threatening gang stands anonymous in shadow, a wrenchingly sweet Scout (Madeleine Farley) reminds them of their individuality.
